IBM launches compact z17 and LinuxONE 5 systems for smaller data centers

IBM introduced single-frame and rack-mount versions of the z17 mainframe and a new LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 line, aimed at customers short on data-center space. The systems offer up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers, and IBM says they add about 20% more cores than the prior configuration. Availability started August 12, 2026, and IBM did not disclose pricing.
