Reuters reports SK hynix in talks with Intel on first U.S. memory production; company says nothing decided

Reuters reported on September 16 that SK hynix is in exploratory talks with Intel to make memory chips in the United States, which would be its first U.S.-based memory production. The two structures described were leasing part of Intel's planned Ohio site, or a joint venture with Intel and cloud companies seeking secure supply. SK hynix said no decisions have been made on either scenario and nothing is finalized with any named company. Any deal could also face a review in Seoul under rules on overseas transfer of sensitive technology.

  • Scenario 1: lease part of Intel's Ohio facility
  • Scenario 2: joint venture with Intel and cloud companies
  • SK hynix: no decisions made on either scenario
  • Korean rules on sensitive technology transfer could trigger review
