Apple starts end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging beta with iOS 26.5

On May 11, 2026 Apple began rolling out end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 whose carriers support it. Android users on the latest Google Messages get it too, in an effort Apple and Google led together. Encryption is on by default and extends to new and existing RCS chats over time, while iMessage stays Apple's option between Apple devices.
