Co-packaged optics (Tomahawk 6 - Davisson)
Tomahawk 6 - Davisson began shipping in October 2025 as the first 102.4 Tbps Ethernet switch with co-packaged optics (CPO). Several system makers planned to show CPO systems at the October 2026 OCP Global Summit.
The numbers
What it is
A switch that puts the optical engines in the same package as the switch chip, instead of using pluggable optical modules at the front panel. Broadcom ties the design to TSMC's COUPE optical-engine technology. The aim is to cut power in large AI data centers, where pluggable optics use a lot of it.
Why it matters to the stock. Optics power and supply are a growing limit on AI cluster size. If CPO wins volume, it changes the optical component supply chain as well as Broadcom's switch revenue. Broadcom does not report CPO as a separate line.
