Meta Platforms owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, which reach about 3.6 billion people a day, and sells targeted advertising across them. Almost all revenue comes from advertising in the Family of Apps segment. The Reality Labs segment builds Quest headsets, Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses and other wearables, and loses about $19 billion a year. Spending on AI models and data centers is the main driver of the stock, with 2026 capital expenditures guided to $130-145 billion.
How it makes money
Meta earns almost all of its revenue from advertising that businesses buy to reach users on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads. Ad pricing and ad volume both drive growth, and the company's AI ranking models decide which ads users see. Smaller paid lines are WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions, which reached about $1 billion of revenue in Q2 2026. Reality Labs sells Quest headsets and AI glasses, which add a small amount of revenue but a large operating loss.
