How it makes money

Palo Alto Networks sells firewall appliances and software, and charges recurring subscriptions and support contracts for the security services that run on them. Most revenue is subscription and support, which is about 80% of the total, so the trader metric to watch is Next-Generation Security ARR, the annualized recurring revenue from its newer platform products. Customers are increasingly bought as bundled platforms, which the company calls platformization. Acquisitions in fiscal 2026 added identity security (CyberArk) and observability (Chronosphere).
