Apple designs and sells iPhone, Mac, iPad, wearables and home products, and runs a growing set of software services such as the App Store, iCloud, advertising and Apple Pay. Its fiscal year ends in late September. Services is now about a quarter of revenue and is the line most exposed to App Store rules, so the stock trades on iPhone cycles, services growth, gross margin, and how regulators allow Apple to charge for its platform.
How it makes money
Apple sells premium hardware at high margins, with iPhone the largest line at about half of revenue, then makes recurring money from the installed base of more than 2.5 billion active devices. Services (App Store commissions, advertising, cloud storage, AppleCare, Apple Pay and payments) carries higher gross margins than hardware. Most sales run through Apple's own stores and website, carriers and resellers. Its results are sensitive to tariff policy and to regulatory limits on App Store fees.
